Nut and Poppyseed Rolls

Nut and poppyseed rolls are a filling and lightly sweet snack or dessert. This Slovak family recipe is a delicious treat warm, served alone or as a nice finish to a meal.

  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/2 lb. of butter
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/2 pt. of sour cream
  • 1/2 cup of chopped nuts
  • 1/2 cup of poppyseeds

Cooking Instructions

  1. Sift flour into a medium sized bowl. Add sugar and salt to the flour and sift the ingredients into the bowl again. Mix butter into the ingredients. In a separate small bowl, beat 4 egg yolks. Add the egg yolks and 1/2 pt. of sour cream to the ingredient mixture. Combine yeast with warm milk and sugar, then add it to the flour mixture. Knead ingredients into a soft dough, adding milk if needed. Place the mixture in the refrigerator overnight. Divide dough into 3 pieces. Roll each piece and spread with nut or poppyseed filling. Roll up and place on a greased baking sheet. Allow to rise for a while. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.

Cooking Notes

To maintain freshness and moisture after rolls are baked, wrap each roll in tin foil and store at room temperature.
